About AREA
Purpose
The Automotive Recyclers’ Environmental Association (AREA) was formed in 1997. AREA is a not-for-profit and the Board of Directors is comprised of members from the automotive recycling industry. The purpose of AREA is:
- To develop and administer an environmental certification process that ensures the environmentally safe removal, transportation, reuse or recycling of hazardous materials;
- To communicate with industry and provide on-going training;
- To work in partnership with government, the Insurance Corporation of B.C. and other stakeholders to develop, implement and administer an environmental management system for automotive recyclers in British Columbia.

Membership
The membership fee for new members is $500+GST for the first year and $175+GST for subsequent years.
The inspection fee for AREA’s Environmental Certification Program is $795 plus GST. Additional charges may apply, such as when re-inspections are required due to a facility’s environmental performance. Should a facility require an inspection outside the annual schedule, AREA may add travel costs.
