Spill Management
Spills - Best Management Practices
Spill procedures should be reviewed with employees on a quarterly basis and records of the review with employees kept on file.
Automotive Recyclers should have a spill kit adequate to deal with the quantity of fluids stored on site. Spill kit includes
- Safety equipment for employees, including gloves and safety glasses;
- Absorbent material for soaking up oils, solvents and antifreeze (e.g., rages, towels, pads, sawdust) or material to neutralize battery acid (e.g., lime);
- Shovels or scoops to clean up spills;
Vehicle receiving areas should have drip pans and absorbent materials to capture spills and all vehicles for dismantling are inspected for leaks when they arrive on site.
Hulk storage areas and crusher areas should be inspected for spills and all spills cleaned up immediately.
Examples of Good practices
Small Spills
Small spills are part of the day-to-day operation of an automotive recycler. Good recyclers clean up the spills immediately. Most recyclers own their property and every spill that is not cleaned up represents a potential liability when it comes time to sell the property or business.
Easy Acsess Spill Kit
A spill kit should be accessible to the employees so that they can clean up the spills when they occur
Examples of Bad Practices
Liability
Spills accumulate when they are not cleaned up immediately. In this yard, the years of dismantling on the ground creates a huge liability to the property owner
